The Sturmgewehr is the mother of all assault rifles and a major step in the development of the modern firearm. It combined low production costs with special ammunition, resulting in a cheap but a very effective full-automatic rifle. Fortunately, development and adoption was delayed by Hitler's objections, thus limiting the amount of guns that actually reached the front.
